Where to next? Here are some places I’m loving for the year ahead.

If you’re anything like me, coming home from one trip just means it’s time to start dreaming about the next one. Whether you're planning a big bucket-list adventure, a romantic escape, or just looking for somewhere new and refreshing, these five unique destinations are really standing out for “where to go on vacation in 2026.”

(Here’s a little travel inspiration to get those wheels turning.)

1. Portugal: Small country, big charm

Portugal is one of those places that feels both totally European and totally relaxed. Lisbon and Porto are full of color, history, and incredible food, and the Algarve’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world. It’s also one of the more affordable European destinations, which is a nice bonus! River cruising has made its way to the Duoro River, and land-based tours are also very popular ways to explore the country and its stunning coastline.

Why go: Laid-back culture, amazing seafood and wine, coastal beauty, easy to combine with Spain

2. Japan: A mix of old and new, in the best way

Japan is high on a lot of travel wish lists right now—and for good reason. You can dive into the buzzing energy of Tokyo, wander peaceful temples in Kyoto, soak in a mountain onsen, or time your trip for cherry blossoms or fall foliage. It’s thoughtful, beautiful, and completely unique. One of the best ways to explore Japan is by tour, so that you can easily and efficiently get from one city to the next with a dedicated guide at your disposal the entire time. Check out this “Cultural Tour of Japan” experience hosted by Collette Vacations, as an example!

Why go: Incredible food, rich traditions, spotlessly clean cities, totally unforgettable

3. The Danube River: See Europe differently

If you want to explore multiple countries without living out of a suitcase, river cruising is the way to go—and the Danube is a classic. You’ll drift through charming towns and major cities in Austria, Germany, Hungary, and more, with wine tastings, castle tours, and stunning views all included. It’s relaxing and immersive, and you only have to unpack once. And just in case you you forgot, I’m hosting a group on the Danube in October 2026 — a perfect time to experience the fall foliage of the region! You can learn more about it here.

Why go: Easy pace, cultural depth, no packing and unpacking, great for couples or groups

4. Australia & New Zealand: Worth the flight

Yes, it’s a long journey—but once you’re there, you’ll be glad you made the trip. Snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, hiking around Queenstown, sipping wine in Marlborough… these two countries offer so much adventure and natural beauty. Exploring Australia and New Zealand by cruise lets you experience so many ports without having to unpack and pack over and over again. Celebrity Cruise Line has a great one to explore, and so does Silversea Cruises as well if you prefer small ship luxury for your cruise experience. If cruising isn’t your thing, we can plan custom itineraries together, or you can join a more in-depth experience with a small group local tour.

Why go: Big adventure, wild landscapes, unique wildlife, friendly people

5. Scotland: Moody skies, cozy vibes, and ancient charm

Scotland is one of my favorite places to plan travel for clients. It has it all— castles, cliffs, charming little inns, and jaw-dropping views at every turn. Whether you want to explore the Highlands, sip whisky by the fire, or just wander Edinburgh’s old streets, it’s a magical kind of place. You can keep Edinburgh as a home base and explore the region (Inverness, Loch Ness, etc.) on day trips, or we can plan a tour for you to travel across the country— from Glasglow to the Isle of Skye and more. Scotland is one of the top family travel inspiration destinations for 2026 as well, and the city is very walkable and easy to get around.

Why go: Dramatic scenery, deep history, warm hospitality, great storytelling
